TYPES OF WORKSHOPS
Unless specified as a Master Class, these workshops are suitable for all levels. Maggie's demonstrations and explanations of technique can be easily understood by a beginner, but can also help a more advanced artist move to a new level.
Indoor workshops are technique-intensive. Generally, each day's session will focus on a new technique or subject. For example, one day the class might work on a specific underpainting technique; another day, the class might focus on a subject such as how to paint water with reflections or moving water. Participants work in a small format, so they are generally able to complete at least one painting each day, giving Maggie a chance to work with them through the entire process.
Outdoor (plein-air) workshops are handled differently. Each day's demonstration will deal with techniques of painting a particular subject. Demonstrations are shorter because of the changing light, and most participants will complete at least two paintings each day. In outdoor workshops in the United States, the class generally will go to a different, though not distant, location each day, in order to experience a variety of subjects.
Foreign workshops include plein air painting as described above, but time is allowed for some sightseeing and enjoying a new location. Occasionally, an excursion will be such that no painting is possible but the group will take photographs and sketch. Foreign workshops are a wonderful combination of experiencing a new country and culture while focusing on painting for the majority of every day. Conversations about painting and art tend to continue through mealtimes and social times, and people often make lasting friendships in these workshops.
MATERIALS
It is not necessary to have a huge assortment of pastels in order to take a workshop. However, a good assortment of colors and values in professional-grade pastels is important. It would be possible to work with a minimal assortment including the following (though more pastels are always a good idea): Five values each of the primary, secondary and tertiary colors as shown on the color wheel, plus five values of warm and cool earth tones, one black and one white pastel.
If at all possible, it's a good idea to have a box to organize the pastels in, so that they can be placed together. Removing the wrappers and breaking the pastel sticks in half (if they are long sticks) is also helpful. Maggie prefers to organize her pastels by value and temperature, with the sections ranging from lightest light to darkest dark, and with warmer colors to one side and cooler colors to the other side.
